2011-2012 Arrowhead Legacy Events and Tickets
Thanks to funding from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, the Arrowhead Library System provides FREE art, history and cultural programs at our public libraries and free arts access through our Event Tickets Program.  See below for programs scheduled at your library and tickets available at library check-out.

DSSO Music To You (performances January 28-April 25):
The DSSO Music To You program brings Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra musicians and instrumental music to the Arrowhead! Focused on engaging musical themes and topics, each program includes musical performances, audience dialogue and a refreshing new look at the world of music  (click here for program descriptions).  This program is family-friendly.  Please see our calendar for the locations, dates and times of these performances.

Okee Dokee Brothers (February 6-10):
The Okee Dokee Brothers performed their knee-slappin', family friendly bluegrass across the region.




321 Art Studio (February 13-March 6): 
Join 321 Art Studio at your library for one of two programs (see Calendar to determine which program is at your library): "Under Construction," or "Draw Your Own Adventure."  Children attending "Under Construction" will hear the story Magic Schoolbus Under Construction, get a visit from Ms. Frizzle, and build and test their own bridges using gumdrops and toothpicks.  Children attending "Draw Your Own Adventure" will get to hear the story of Harold and the Purple Crayon, discuss adventures, and create their own adventure book!  Both programs stimulate the imagination and spur creativity.  Appropriate for all ages (some caretaker assistance may be required for younger children).















Creativity Tank (March 6-23):
Creativity Tank provides hands-on art projects based on two Native American traditions:  Medicine Bags or Totem "Poles" (see Calendar to determine which program is at your library).  Children will learn about the history behind these two interesting traditions and either stitch their own leather pouch (Medicine Bag) or create a representation of their life story out of clay (Totem "Pole").  Both programs can be enjoyed by children of all ages (some adult assistance may be required for smaller children with the Medicine Bags program).



The PuppetTellers (March 23-31):
Come to your library and hear the story of "A Night on Bear Island," told by the PuppetTellers!  With rod-puppets, colorful graphics and amazing sound effects, this story of courage and friendship will engage any age audience.  This program is entertaining for families and children of all ages!


Poetry: Sheila Packa and Michelle Matthees, "Poetry of Place," (April 2-17)
Join poets Sheila Packa and Michelle Matthees for a poetry program that explores and celebrates the role of place in our lives.  Depending on your library, participants will enjoy either a reading or workshop (or both!) that looks at how place is tied to memory, tradition, pride and even alienation.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own work to share.  See our calendar for locations, dates and times!

BIOS: Sheila Packa is the author of "Echo & Lightning" and "Cloud Birds," editor of "Migrations: Poetry  Prose for Life's Transitions," and served as Duluth's Poet Laureate from 2010-12.  Michelle Matthees is a current Minnesota State arts Board Fellow and the authro of "served," "outside," and "Junket."




Minnesota History Players (April 9-17):
Costumed interpreters portray remarkable Minnesotans through telling vibrant stories and sharing intriguing artifacts.  Libraries will host a visit by either Virginia Mae Hope or Maud Hart Lovelace.  Virginia Mae Hope (1921-1944) lived a short but exciting lifes as a women Airforce Service Pilot during WWII.  Learn about her life growing up in Minnesota during the Great Depression and serving as a female pilot.  Maud Hart Lovelace (1892-1980) was a children's author who wrote the Betsy-Tacy series of books.  Learn about her life and work.  These programs are better suited for older children/teens/adults.  See our calendar for dates.

Of Vikings and Voyageurs (April 16-27):
Jack Salmela will lead the audience on an enlightening tour of early Minnesota history based on research he compiled writing the book, “Of Vikings and Voyageurs.”  Using original maps, authentic voyageur artifacts (including a musket to be fired outside if the venue and weather permit), and accompanied by a voyageur reenactor, this presentation is sure to intrigue.  Lake Superior Magazine describes “Of Vikings and Voyageurs” as, “Stir "The Da Vinci Code" and "National Treasure" into the Northwoods and the resulting mixture would be the plot of this latest book by Jack Salmela.” This informative and interactive program is geared towards older children and adult audiences. Mixi, Makesi, Musica with Richie Johnson (April 30-May 17):
Come, Mix and Make Music with Richie Johnson at your public library!  Johnson, a self-described “singer-songwriter/comedian/historian/magician,” will teach children the art of storytelling through songwriting, create musical instruments from junk items in the recycling bin, and make new songs with audience assistance.  Participants should bring a good imagination and love having fun!  This program is sure to charm audiences ages 1-100. Happy Days are Here Again: Jazz Musician Rhonda Laurie
Select Locations (May 1-5):
Enjoy the spirited songs of the Greatest Generation with acclaimed jazz vocalist Rhonda Laurie and her band during their newest show “Happy Days Are Here Again: Uplifting Songs of the 30s, 40s and 50s.” Laurie and her band will bring back musical highlights from the era while also sharing some history of the times and those who made the music. “Sentimental Journey,” “Dream a Little Dream” and “My Favorite Things,” will inspire you to smile and sing along during this 90-minute show.  See our calendar for locations, dates and times.





"Photography for Everyone," Workshop with John Gregor (May 7-23):
Join John Gregor of Coldsnap Photography for an inspiring presentation of his photographs and ideas, tips and techniques that will help you become a better photographer.  This two-part program will focus on nature photography and taking photos of people.  It is geared toward teens and adults.  Hope to see you there!  See our calendar for locations, dates and times.


Climb Theater (May 29- June 8):
"Raven and Grandmother Mouse" or "The Tortoise and Hare"
Climb Theater will be touring the region performing one of two programs at each library: “Raven and Grandmother Mouse,” a lively adaptation of the Pacific Northwest Folktale about truth and hard work, and “The Tortoise and Hare,” a lively adaptation of the Aesop Fable about focus and determination. These programs are built for children 3-8 years old.  See our calendar for programs, locations, dates and times.



Dream Class Guy (June 11-15)
“Understanding the Dreams You Dream”
Dream Analyst Craig Groethe presents a fun, interactive and enlightening workshop on dream analysis.  Participants will learn about the types of dreams and their significance, the symbolic language of dreams, and how to glean insight from their own dreams.  This program is oriented towards a teen/adult audience.
